It’s easy to overlook Easy Come, Easy Go, coming as did after Strait’s biggest-selling album to date, the soundtrack to his starring role in Pure Country. Still, Strait’s 1993 album contains some his most stellar traditional material, as well as the gentle ballads craved by fans of modern country. The album kicks off in fine fashion with “Stay Out of My Arms,” which, along with “I wasn’t Fooling Around” and “That’s Where My Baby Feels At Home,” forms a three-part tribute to George Jones, one of Strait’s idols. Their connection is made more direct with “Lovebug,” a nimble cover of Jones’ 1966 hit. On the other side of the coin are songs like “The Man in Love With You,” “I’d Like To Have That One Back,” and “Without Me Around,” storytelling ballads that put a country twang to compositions that could almost belong to Billy Joel or the Carpenters. In between these two sides of Strait is the title track, the album’s centerpiece and an expression of equanimity tinted with the Mexican flavor of Strait’s native San Antonio.
