9 Songs, 34 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Anyone familiar with and sympathetic to the unusual and eclectic nature of the record label Drag City will find Early Surf by Axis: Sova to be in keeping with the label’s love for fuzz-driven high weirdness and way-out psychedelia. In other words, this work by guitarist/keyboardist Brett Sova is the type of music you either love or hate, with little in-between. For those who love it, Early Surf is essential listening. “Glass” evokes ghosts from The Stooges’ debut album with touches of The Doors and Julian Cope (it's the organ), while the seven-minute “Fractal Ancestry” imagines what Suicide might’ve sounded like had a guitarist been at their sessions.
