“Early hours” can mean different things: Are you winding down after being up all night, or are you just rising to meet the sun? Often, the artists helming our Early Hours DJ mix series cater to both frames of mind, but for Berlin-based producer Laurel Halo, it’s inspired by the misty, tingling, late-night feeling when you’ve come home from a night out. “As someone familiar with late nights, I understand the importance of having music that isn’t too insistent or narrative-based,” Halo tells Apple Music. “The sound should let you wander around in it—should be fluttering, flexible, and not too dramatic or dark.” A few romantic or soft moments can “help you touch base with your emotional state,” she adds, which is why her mix of ambient, lo-fi, and experimental tunes is peppered with tender vocals.
