Golden Boy

Kojo Funds coined the term “Afro-swing” for the diasporic London sound that takes inspiration from Afrobeats but also “swings” through R&B, dancehall, grime, and beyond. The more music the East Londoner releases, the more that description undersells the scope of his fluidity and invention. Whack-a-mole-ing his way around genres, his flow remains melodic and precise as he dispenses street-level wisdom on gauzy hip-hop (“Stallin’”), takes grime back to its UK garage roots (“Who Am I?”), and delivers pure sunshine on the Caribbean, lovestruck “High Grade.” With “Check” and “Warning,” meanwhile, he repurposes hits of the past—Craig David’s “7 Days” and Snow’s “Informer,” respectively—to enrich British pop’s present.
