EDITORS’ NOTES

The Japanese kanji character for “light” adorns the cover of Lupe’s album—an accurate description of the contents within. The Chicago MC sheds megawatts of insight, bobbing and weaving over musical beds ranging from trap to vintage dirty south to electro-funk. “More Than My Heart” is a love letter to mothers. “NGL” is a cautionary tale. On “Made in the USA,” Lupe drops a rap history lesson. DROGAS Light is a convincing master class about staying true.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics. Mastered for iTunes

Not the same Lupe

It's good, but not great. Don't expect Food & Liquor-esqu intelligence and depth from this album (at least going by the presale tracks). The beats are way more commercial sounding and don't have that authentic Lupe feeling to them (Wild Child is about as close as it comes). The lyrics may be more personal than political this time around but not even to the same level as Lasers (2011) was where he poured his heart out on the tracks. Just seems like this one is geared for sales and airplay this time around, especially with all the collaborations. Hopefully this is just a door he needs to walk through to get back in the studio for F&L III. Don't dumb it down Lupe, hip hop needs your real words to the world.
