EDITORS’ NOTES

Keith Whitley’s voice fills Don’t Close Your Eyes to the rafters—it's supple and unassuming with a down-home Kentucky twang that never overstays its welcome. “A Day in the Life of a Fool” has a Merle Haggard feel—that rare ability to unabashedly sing from the heart like no one's looking. Whitley’s country roots shine through on contemporary ballads like the title track and “When You Say Nothing at All.” Don’t Close Your Eyes is the last album Whitley saw release, before his passing in 1989. Listen and hear a country superstar in full creative bloom.

We need this man back

This was Keith's second to last album before his fatal death in 1989 ( the year I was born!). I bought this on my birthday three years ago, Once I heard it the whole way through the first time I thought to myself, "He is unbeliveable!" It was this album that officially hooked me to country music for life, his material ranges from love ballads to tunes fit for a line dance down at the local country club. While I agree with the iTunes reviewer about the album's singles ( Tracks 4, 8, 9 and 10) being the best, I don't think that the rest of the songs should be overlooked or considered weaker. By the sound of it almost ALL of these tracks could've been charting singles to a certain degree ( especially Honky Tonk Heart). Country music is a great genre with many excellent artists but VERY FEW can live up to the calibur and style of Keith Whitley, we need more artists like him to come out. If you're listen to country music AT ALL OF ANY KIND this album or any other of Whitley's is ESSENTIAL. Rest In Peace Keith, Rest In Peace.

What a sad day in country music back in 1989

The day Keith Whitley died too soon from alcohol poisoning for me changed country music forever. He is one of my favorite country recording artists of all time. I've listened to all of his albums including his deep cuts. Even watched some of his live performances online and I have to say that he put on amazing shows. If he were still with us I would have seen him live at one of his shows in a heartbeat. Now this album Don't Close Your Eyes is very varied. Anything from honky tonk dance tunes to love songs. However my two favorites that i recommend are When You Say Nothing At All and Some Old Side Road. MR. WHITLEY YOUR LEGEND WILL NEVER DIE! RIP!!!
