A stunning, unpredictable, and immensely rewarding listen

This has been my favorite album two calendar years running. What could have been a fairly straightforward rock record is made so much more than that by Autobahn's willingness to throw conflicting (or complementary?) emotions, tempos, chords, and atmospheres into the same song. Right about when you start to settle into a track it'll explode into something that completely takes you by surprise. The first time the chorus kicked in on "Immaterial Man" (more than halfway through the song) I started grinning like an idiot and couldn't stop. Same with "Impressionist". Nothing about the album feels forced or overly-dramatic, and the speed, weight, and urgency are amplified by the bits of sunlight that punctuate the record (usually in the form of an unforgettable hook) rather than being tempered by them. It's like a big, iron sledgehammer with a bouquet of flowers tied to the handle. Can't wait to hear what these guys make next.

Also floating around somewhere online is a cover of Blitz's "New Age" that they did. It's spectacular.
