EDITORS’ NOTES

Emika is as much a sound artist as she is a pianist, stripping her piano back by removing its wooden casing so that every inflection can be heard—from the hammer hitting the keys to the decay of the strings. Her sound world is mysterious, exotic, seductive. Eastern inflections mix with an affecting innocence, bringing to mind the music of accordionist Yann Tiersen, immediately apparent from the opening track “Dilo 7.” “Dilo 20,” meanwhile, features beautiful uses of electronic effects, while the subtle distortions of “Dilo 11” create a palette of otherworldly yet entirely beguiling sounds, fading to eternity.
