John McLaughlin was (and remains, at age 75 at the time of this writing) a primary focal point of melodic genius that bridges jazz and rock like no other. Possessing a singular white-hot dedication to his own inner metronome, McLaughlin introduced to an enduring generation of fans his amazing ambition and unique musical signature in multicultural fusion music. In his 50+-year career he has displayed his ability to blister long, dense runs of highly amplified arpeggios from his formidable double-necked guitar with breakneck speed and deft modal time signatures to the sublime rendering of some of the most gently caressing chamber duets between guitar and violin or piano ever recorded and that only describes a small chapter of his overall contribution to jazz and guitar music as a whole.

In 'Devotion' McLaughlin can be heard just starting to crystallize his vision of fusion in a most muscular way, stretching the concepts of rock and psychedelia in what ends up being a wonderful experiment in power and avant garden jazz/rock. Bill Frisell, Larry Coryell, James "Blood" Ulmer, and countless other guitarists stand on McLaughlin's shoulders, who, in the same turn, owes Jimi Hendrix endless thanks for unleashing this torrent of mind altering music.
