EDITORS’ NOTES

Lhasa de Sela cast a spell upon the world music scene with her atmospheric debut, which uses Mexican folk to probe the human condition. How much can a heart take before it shatters? Lhasa investigates with her remarkable voice, a woozy contralto that seems to carry a lifetime of experience in its depths. “De Cara a la Pared” may find the singer crying, face to the wall, but she’s no shrinking violet—on “Por Eso Me Quedo,” the lyrics are resigned but the delivery is furious.

Selections?

Who on earth made these selections? You can only hear Lhasa's voice on a couple of the previews, and then usually only for a couple of seconds. I'm sold on the musical part, but I'd like to know what her voice sounds like, too.

Breathtaking

Lhasa's debut album, "The Long Road," was captivating from the very first chord of the very first song. Featuring songs in Spanish, French, and English; I was immediately impressed by this artist's profound versatility, notwithstanding the passion with which she delivered each song.

This album is no different. From the very first song, there is that tell-tale passion and sensuality that lets you know exactly who you're listening to. Lhasa del Sela is the perfect album to put on repeat in the CD player. Not a single song should be skipped, not a single lyrics missed. Allow her to to caress the senses.. and while you're at it.. why don't you get yourself some authentic Mexican food and cervezo ;)

Lhasa is haunting

From the moment I first heard her, I was captured. It was like the heavens opened up and then all in my world was complete. It's hard to believe she's gone. That lovely voice is gone. There is one artist who when you hear for the first time, changes your life, deepens it, gives it a meaning and depth that you never knew it could have. Lhasa was that artist for me. She still is. Lhasa will always live on.
