ZZ TOP's seminal album, and the best blues/rock album of all time!!!

Each birthday I choose a favorite album from my archives, relax with a glass of wine and soak up every juicy note uninterrupted from the 1st track to the last. This year’s birthday album trip down memory lane is “Deguello” (1979) by ZZ Top. This is ZZ’s seminal album in my opinion, right before they went in a more techno-pop direction. All the songs are killer and matched in quality by the performance of 3 pros at the absolute top of their game, especially Billy Gibbons’ tasty guitar. Textbook!
An old band mate of mine toured with ZZ many years ago, and one late night on the bus Billy shared with him one of his guitar secrets. Billy said that he managed to get an audience with the great Muddy Waters before he passed, and Muddy told him one of his secrets was to use the edge of a quarter as a pick to get a great jagged-blues tone. There are many places on “Deguello” where you can clearly hear Mr. Gibbons employing Muddy’s technique. Case in point, check out all the solo work in “Cheap Sunglasses”. It just Kills!
I had the good fortune of meeting Billy in a Newport Beach restaurant on my birthday in 2002. He bumped into me on his way to the restroom. He stopped dead in his tracks and looked at me intently because he thought he knew me. He slowly lowered his sunglasses down the bridge of his nose and looked me straight in the eye and squinted as he tried to place the face and come up with my name. I smiled at him and said “Hi Billy”, which made him even more sure that he knew me from somewhere. I broke the tension by letting him know that he doesn’t actually know me but that I sure know him. I went on to tell him what a huge fan I was all the way back to my teenage days in Houston where the TOP first got their start in the early-mid 70’s. He was super cool to me and took his time chatting with me for a couple minutes. He even invited me over to a film set close by where they were shooting their latest video. So on my birthday 2016, I raise a glass to you Billy Gibbons! “I Thank You” for the great memories and one of the best rock/blues albums of all time!
