Definitely a Greatest Hits

I was never a big fan of the LS during their time together, but in recent months I found myself rediscovering them and developing a greater appreciation for a number of songs penned mostly by John Sebastian. This album collects what I believe really are an impressive group of songs when you cull out the best from the LS’s albums. I wouldn’t listen to their lesser compositions, but I’m very moved by some of their best songs featuring catchy, sometimes downright gorgeous melodies and thoughtful, often tender lyric sentiments in arrangements that are creative and nicely played. Sure, some melancholy and nostalgia creeps in for me. But I love a beautiful song like “You and Me and Rain on the Roof,” with its deft mixture of country, pop and other influences with a touching story. Other highlights are songs that often were hits for them: “Summer in the City,” “You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice,” “Younger Girl,” “Darling Be Home Soon” and “Didn’t Want to Have to Do It”. So this is a band with a lesser standing in the pantheon of Sixties Music but now stands out as a worthy, unique contribution.
