EDITORS’ NOTES

Sing what you know or sing what they want? Darkness and Light shows that John Legend knows the answer to that tricky question. The R&B singer wraps his magnificent voice around issues of the day, hearkening back to Curtis, Stevie, and Marvin. “I Know Better” speaks to that time, promising to use his voice for good. This mindset applies to slow jams—“Love Me Now,” “Overload,” and “What You Do To Me”—ringed with shades of pain. Producer Blake Mills (responsible for Alabama Shakes’ Sound and Color) fills the album with incredible, pulsating touches.

Honestly...

People are so petty, judging John Legend's music for being "explicit" before they even hear what the song sounds like. Don't judge things before they come out, especially when rating the album 1 star for that reason and that reason alone! Honestly this is a lot better than what people are giving it credit for, and people need to stop being so petty and give Legend a chance to show you

Call me a skeptic but...

I expected it to be impossible to create more addictive music than the last recordings. How could I have underestimated John Legend? I don't know - but it won't happen again. He's a musical genius who's probably not even given us the best of what he's got in him. This is amazing. This makes me want to dance and be joyful and generous of spirit. Thanks for reminding us to be present and rooted in the business of now. Awestruck. Grateful. Thanks, Mr. Legend.
