Shake the Shudder
!!!’s seventh album was conceived during a week of jamming in Barcelona. Each night, frontman Nic Offer had a “f*cking fantastic” time editing the sessions on their apartment balcony in his underwear. That sense of fun and abandon rings through the thumping rhythms, invigorating grooves, and luminous hooks—from “The One 2”’s junglist house to the elastic funk of “Five Companies.” Gloomier thinking lurks within lyrics that explore heartbreak, politics, and aging but, 20 years since they formed, the dance-punk veterans are as energized and energizing as ever.
