EDITORS’ NOTES

Macy Gray can sing anything and make it sound like a Macy Gray song. If you weren't already familiar with the original versions of the tracks presented here, there'd be no reason to suspect they weren't new Macy Gray songs. Yet they come from a variety of artists and musical styles. The Eurythmics' "Here Comes the Rain Again" is arguably the album's most well-known tune. But where Annie Lennox sang it with a deliberately restrained approach, Gray turns it out with her emotions front and center. Humorous interludes from J.B. Smoove (who thinks her mic stand should be a sword), Nicole Scherzinger, and M.C. Lyte lighten the mood, as does an excellent interpretation of The Toyes' "Smoke 2 Joints." Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" centers on a thrilling Hammond organ riff, a serpentine guitar solo, and Gray's dramatic reading. The Wire and Luther star Idris Elba joins Gray for the super-catchy Colbie Caillat tune "Bubbly." It's the sound of an artist having fun.
