That's when we start to wail baby! Big Joe is currently clocking in at number 2 just behind Wynonie Harris on my list of the best "old school" R&B shouters. I like it!!

Joe Turner - Greatest Hits

Joe Turner's music is classic early R & B. For many of the reticent, his "Shake Rattle & Roll" destroyed the wall between "race music" and R&B . . . and, ultimately, Rock & Roll, itself. This album is a "must" for any student of the popular music revolution of the 50's and is an absolutely essential item for us aging refugees from the all-to-brief dirty boogie days of R&B. Turner's sounds conjure up never-to-be-forgotten echos of revved-up '40 Fords and '37 Chevvies parked in drive-ins ("typically named "Toot-'n-Tellum") with synchronized car radios brazenly blaring music that we weren't allowed to pay at home or - God forbid - at school sock-hops.
