I had always been a fan of Conor Oberst's lyrics in his early work...but wasn't really impressed with the music until he found country in Cassadega. But this self-titled album is the culmination of all his previous work. With obvious country and classic rock influences, from such acts as The Band, Oberst elequently paints a picture with his superb lyrics while creating an atmosphere that feels like he is just jamming out with his friends. Formerly known as Bright Eyes, Oberst has certainly matured, musically and lyrically...and the result is stunning...a modern classic.

Brilliant...As Usual

Oberst is in fine form here, with a self-titled release that strikes a nice balance between Cassadaga's underwhelming alt-country and I'm Wide Awake It's Morning's stunning folk rock. Lyrically, Oberst tackles the same themes he's been focusing on for the past few years, moving further away from the self-deprecating introspection of earlier Bright Eyes releases and deeper into widescreen Americana territory, sounding more like Neil Young meets Bob Dylan than ever before.
