13 Songs, 51 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Decades after its release, Confusion Is Sex still sounds like a gutting of rock 'n' roll's heart and stomach. It takes the music's instrumentation, removes whatever accessibility and politeness there was, and plays with the remains. Sonic Youth had come out of NYC's No Wave scene, with some members apprenticing with Glenn Branca. Perhaps this shouldn't even be considered rock music. Had Sonic Youth not worked toward rock 'n' roll on its future albums—and had there not been such a definitive, loving thrashing of The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" included here—the band would be regarded as an aggressive art project. Those familiar with the band's feedback and alternate tunings will find songs like "(She's in A) Bad Mood," "Protect Me You," and "Shaking Hell" quite accessible. The inclusion of the rare 1983 EP Kill Yr. Idols adds the title track and "Brother James" to the "hit" pile. However, those new to Sonic Youth might consider Sister, Daydream Nation, or even Goo as easier entry points. SY took its early abrasion seriously.
