11 Songs, 42 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Martha Wainwright has no time for the timid. Her son was born, her mother died and her marriage is a balancing act. Wainwright's mom, singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle, wrote one final song, "Proserpina," inspired by Roman myth, the story of spring, that Martha sings in her mother's voice as a tribute and to be closer to her spirit. The entire album is as naked as Martha on the album cover. She sings to her newborn, on "Everything Wrong," about the ups and downs of her own marriage. "Can You Believe It?" tells us make-up sex is all she gets. From the beginning strains of "I Am Sorry" to the elegiac live performance of "I Am A Diamond," Wainwright imbues every note with 100% commitment. Her theatrical vocals, channelling Yoko Ono and Tori Amos, breathe unstoppable life into the club-thumping "I Wanna Make An Arrest" and the scale-climbing "Radio Star." This is epic.

the bravest wainwright

Every member of this family on both sides is beyond talented. This new collection by Martha proves to me that she is the bravest Wainwright. She just pours her heart and soul into every lyric. It is such a vulnerable place to put oneself and yet .....album after album she continues to put herself out there. I love Rufus beyond compare, but I have a very large soft spot in my heart for Martha, who may think she has a smaller part in her family's legacy, all the while not realizing she is a very large and strong part of it. Her music is amazing. So brave. Thank you Martha for this newest edition to your very fabulous contribution to your family's legacy. I for one, love your music.

A Voice With A Thousand Doors

I saw Martha perform for the first time last night. Last night and here I’m listening to a wholly original voice I just can’t get enough of.
