Simone Scores Again!

I'm not much of a baroque fan, but with more issues like this I could well be! I think that her previous issue "Lava" contained more interesting music, but Kermes sounds better here than before. I don't know if it's that her singing is more confident or that the technique sounds better integrated into the entire singing conception, but I can't imagine any voice aficionado hearing her and not being impressed. The voice seems to be miked more closely, but other than exposing an occasional breathiness, it actually adds to the immediacy of her singing. As I've mentioned before, I don't know what the word "dramatic" is so often used to describe Kermes's voice, because I hear it still as rather small and light. That is not to say that the pieces she sings can't be dramatic or that she doesn't sing them dramatically. Her feeling for words and phrases sound true and almost instinctual. As her fans have come to expect, her ornamentation is quite original and thrilling. Highly recommended!
