Keys and Codes (Remixes)

Keys and Codes (Remixes)

It’s an odd but not unwelcome juxtaposition to have the sensitive heart-on-the-sleeve musings of Ben Gibbard and Death Cab for Cutie sliced and diced for the dance floor. Just as Gibbard’s work with The Postal Service indicates, he’s more than game to hear what the electronic world has to offer. The Cut Copy remix of “Doors Unlocked and Open” kickstarts this investigation into another side of Death Cab, and other remixers also have quite a fun time playing with the tracks. “You Are a Tourist” retains the original’s melodicism but adds kinetic energy. Dillon Francis truly warps “Underneath the Sycamore.” Rac Maury funks up “Some Boys” until it rocks into outer space. Unicorn Kid turns “Unobstructed Views” into a shimmering keyboard piece where Gibbard’s voice fights for survival. “Home Is a Fire” turns into a moody ambient track, while “Codes and Keys,” remixed by Yeasayer, now sounds like, well, a Yeasayer track. This is sure to divide hardcore fans, but for those who enjoy playing with electronics it’s quite the trip.
