18 Songs, 1 Hour 45 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

As electronic music surges across the world in ever-increasing waves, a few artists stand out with knowledge of both the genre's history and an understanding of the importance of chasing that infinite beat. Only one of them wears a mouse mask. For his 2012 effort (with a title that judiciously follows his previous efforts, Random Album Title and For Lack of a Better Name), Deadmau5 stacks up the synths and pitch-shifting and defiant beats. "Maths" is an outer-space funk odyssey that runs at double speed, while "Professional Griefers" is a teenage riot compacted into less than five minutes with help from My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way. Both Imogen Heap and Cypress Hill drop by to help make sure the mouse gets his message of complete abandon across.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

Great, with a couple issues

The real problem I have with this album is that there is little to no unity. His last three albums all had something in common: 1) they each had a unique yet consistent feel 2) they could be played as a continuous mix. "Album title goes here" follows neither of these precedents. The order of the tracks seems arbitrary/careless and there is no unifying feel because every track is so different. One minute you are listening to bouncy progressive house track and the next it's a chilled out hip hop track. I would expect more from someone who performs mixes for a living. In this way the album reminds me of "Get Scraped," one of his earliest and least mature works.

However, that is not to say that deadmau5 has not grown as a producer. The production value of these tracks is top notch, and he manages to champion virtually every genre he attempts. Superliminal is subtle yet brilliant, a dark dark/melancholy electro track reminiscent of Cthulhu sleeps, although I really don't understand why he put it first. Channel 42 is catchy and fun, even if it screams Wolfgang Garnter (they worked together on it). The Veldt is a house masterpiece, and the equally excellent Tommy Trash remix gives it a high-energy, anthem feel. Professional Griefers is a skillful, catchy fusion of electro and rock, and the video is rather creative as well. October and Closer are great. Strobe is, of course, the best song on the album, and it has been edited slightly to freshen it up. I love it. Strobe will be remembered as one of the great things to come out of this era of EDM. But the fact that strobe is still the best track makes me wonder whether deadmau5 will ever release anything to top it. Every year I wonder whether his album will contain the next Strobe, and every year I am just a little disappointed. The epic build up and chord progression of Fn Pig comes close, but when the melody drops it becomes just another funky electro track. Good, but no Strobe (that should be an expression). My only other frustration is that, as good as the Veldt is, I'm getting a little tired of the side-chained eighth notes.

As a fan, my challenge for deadmau5 is to release an album with 1) a continuous mix 2) a unifying theme or sound 3) brand new new samples and synths, not just tweaks. I want him to create something amazing, because he is clearly capable of it. (we want another strobe :D)

Are you kidding me?

I'm so glad we're all a bunch of totally loyal Mou5heads with no opinion except that everything Deadmau5 does is perfect - best yet.

Bullpucky!!

This is by far the weakest, most unfinished and inconsistent album yet (except for Get Scrapped, but that was 2006!)

Take care of the Paperwork? A song that goes nowhere!! Massive Let Down : (
October 1 another filler track that I wish Joel would have flushed out even more.
1-13 Telemiscommunications 1 - great track for the next Frou Frou album has NO BUSINESS being on a Deadmau5 album.

Look, if you're giving this 5-stars AND you own ALL of Deadmau5's albums, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Joel, I know touring and playing in Vegas every night to bazillions of dollars and working on your album label and world tour takes a lot out of you - I only wish you would have flushed these out and solidified the albums personality - it's all over the place in a bad way.

Finally - truly unhappy that the final version of Fn Pig and Sleepless are missing key elements that ROCKED on the Soundcloud versions. The groove Fn Pig went into was AMAZING! AND, your singing on Sleepless fit the song and now it is a shell of a song with no melody. Why did you not include your vocals?

Sigh.

This isn't "The BEST" Joel can do and he knows it.
