15 Songs, 55 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Genre-mashing floor-fillers (“Dare”), wistful, synth-driven ballads (“On Melancholy Hill”) candy-coated surrealist rap (“Superfast Jellyfish”): there’s hardly a patch of musical terrain that isn’t covered in this punchy edit of the cartoon quartet’s decade-long recording career. Nestled next to each other—and packaged with Daley hook-up “Doncamatic”—there’s detectable growth, and boundless invention, across Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn’s three records. But there’s surprising cohesion too and it all amounts to a peerless collection of shape-shifting, collaborative pop.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics. Mastered for iTunes

Pros and Cons

Pro: Gorillaz have stood the test of time. This music is great still and doesn't sound dated.
Con: The title is ridiculously inaccurate. Tomorrow Comes Today was released as an EP in 2000, and not as an entity representing their first album. If they were to be accurate to the title, Tomorrow Comes Today would come after Rock the House, when it was actually released as a single for the album.
Pro: These songs are great and don't let anyone dissuade you from them.
Con: Some of these versions are chopped up single versions in which whole verses are taken out (Stylo).
Pro: It features the two club singles played in 2001 that everyone remembers!...
Con: ....at the cost of two singles that actually were released in early 2011. The last single here is Doncamatic, which came out in 2010 (and is a weak song that is more Daley than Gorillaz).
Con: Though not released outside of US promo copies, beloved almost-single Rhinestone Eyes is left off of this release, despite there being absolutely no one who would be upset if it were included. This is a huge con. Doncamatic is a Daley song Gorillaz pushed out last second in place of Rhinestone Eyes to try to land a hit.
