10 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Cigarettes After Sex frontman Greg Gonzalez uses his music like a diary, each song framing a vivid, intimate memory of a lover or friend. They’re bracingly honest dispatches, recalling moments of helpless obsession (“Sweet”) and snarling at infidelity with dark, profane humor (“Young & Dumb”). Tethered by bittersweet melodies, the band’s slow, hazy pop-noir gives the joy and pain of Gonzalez’s tales time and space to sink in, and your heart might race and break as hard as his on “K” and “Apocalypse.”

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

Decent vibe, no range.

The music is moody, the lyrics are intense and visceral, unfortunately the vocals are boring and mundane. Every song sounds the same vocally. At least of the 5 I previewed here. It would be nice if the singer showed some depth, range and emotion within instead of emo monotoned.

Current favorite band

I bought apocalypse after just hearing it once. Finally had to go search out more and couldn’t decide so bought the whole album which I rarely do anymore. Love it.

Have on repeat - and then I play over and over and over and ...

I discovered the band from a single on a compilation (I thought it was a woman at first but saw a video in which it showed a beared guy singing) and have fallen in love with them! I read a review that the singers favorite singer is Francoise Hardy (which is great to see someone say in an interview and uber cool). Love that the singer is Latino. Would love to hear him do something in Spanish one day too.
