Contemporary Christian star Forrest Frank follows his 2024 LP CHILD OF GOD with this 20-track collection, which continues the Texas-born artist and producer’s efforts to bring modern sounds to the genre. Versed in pop, indie, and hip-hop, Frank has an expansive take on what makes worship music, and lyrically leans into more positive, uplifting messaging instead of fire and brimstone. CHILD OF GOD II opens with “ENCORE,” a gauzy overture with a snippet of Frank speaking to his grandfather about his rise to fame, a move that sets up the personal nature of the rest of the project. “YOUR WAY’S BETTER” pairs a bubblegum beat with a sunny lyric, recalling Chance the Rapper’s pre-fame work with Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment. Other highlights are “NO L’s,” an edgier number that could sneak onto pop radio, and “LIVE YOUR LIFE,” a laidback track that splits the difference between Jack Johnson and Still Woozy. Guests on CHILD OF GOD II include actor and musician Nathan Davis Jr. on the slinky, trap-inspired “WOKE UP THIS MORNING” and Nigerian singer-rapper Limoblaze on the loose and groovy “LIKE WATER.” Country star Thomas Rhett joins Frank on “NOTHING ELSE,” a short but potent celebration of what makes life sweet.
