Preface: if you loved Utopia and are in general a fan of more "radio oriented" music, you will probably love this record as well.
So going into this purchase I was quite excited. I thought Utopia was solid and from what I had heard from the new material, I felt as if they were heading in the right direction. Upon purchasing this record I was immediately let down. The opener was very lackluster and actually resulted in me skipping it halfway through. I could go song by song, but the issues I hear are present in every song.
I really want you guys to break away from this cookie-cutter diatonic radio BS. You're marketing yourselves as prog metal, so be progressive. Step away from the ababcba song structures and work on creating some actual pieces of music. Music that makes the listener think.
I'd say that on this record, the drumming stands out as being a positive and driving force. His technical approach and forward thinking juxtapositions are certainly on the right track.
I could keep going on the good and bad but you get what I'm saying by now. I think everyone in this band is talented and I feel confident that you guys are capable of making a great prog album, this one however falls very short.
