9 Songs, 32 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Upon signing to Stones Throw, Jonwayne released a series of mixtapes on cassette, a format that jibed with his casual, homespun aesthetic. Cassette on Vinyl rescues a handful of songs from those cassettes, which were arguably the truest representation of Jonwayne’s sound and style. While Jonwayne’s earlier music was built from electronic tones, these works adopt a much more organic and spontaneous disposition. He had also matured as a rapper, as evidenced by “Gross,” “Bukowski,” and “Ode to Mortality,” probably the three most complete songs on the collection. They display the sense of self-assurance and comfort that Jonwayne has earned.
