Their fifth album finds hardcore stalwarts Hüsker Dü going softer, layering acoustics over their typically frantic racket to create a timeless-sounding album. The six-minute “Hardly Getting Over It” wouldn’t be out of place in a college dorm room today; the soaring chorus on “Sorry Somehow” shows early shades of what would become pop-punk. To complete the band’s growth on Candy Apple Grey, “Too Far Down” is a somber and mature ode to living with depression.
