Nueva Vista

I bought this expecting Buena Vista Social Club, Pt 2. I couldn't have been more surprised...
This album takes its cues from traditional Cuban music as much as it does from modern hip hop, dub, funk, jazz, and soul.
Orlando Lopez is a talented bassist and has surrounded himself with some brilliant musicians (Hugh Masekela, Bigga Morrison, Pee Wee Ellis...) on this album.
The results are stunning. Most songs are modal vamps or jams around a theme—like the homage to Charles Mingus on "Tumbao No 5," where Lopez freaks CM's "Haitian Fight Song."
Other standouts include the dubby "Redencion," the jazzy workout "Mis Dos Pequeñas" (replete with someone channeling jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli), the druggy dub piece "Tumbanga" (a song that would fit well on Thievery Corp's last disc) featuring the great Masekela on horn, and the soulful collabo with the late Ibrahim Ferrer on "Wahira."
This is a great jazzy, funky, sometimes trippy, joyride. Highly recommended.

Simply Splendid

I can't stop playing Mis Dos Pequenas. Just can't get sick of it. My wife is going to strangle me but I just can't help it. Makes you want to jump up and dance all day long. Just download this one song and you'll be hooked.
