Editors’ Notes It took long enough for this NEA Jazz Master pianist’s veteran trio to be documented on a recording. But better late than never, and this set for the Impulse imprint showcases the group’s refined interplay. The pianist/composer’s lyricism is perfectly supported by the swing of drummer Johnathan Blake and bassist Kiyoshi Kitagawa, whether on a tune as lightly effervescent as “Magic Dance” or one that’s full of boppish energy, such as “Bud Like.” Covers include two pieces by Monk: a grooving “Shuffle Boil” and a dreamy “Light Blue” (which Barron takes solo).
