EDITORS’ NOTES

A world-renowned hip-hop duo based in the Bay Area, Zion I has been wowing heads ever since its classic genre-bending debut album, 2000's Mind Over Matter. Over the years, Zion I's sound has continued to expand and evolve, and musically the duo of Zumbi and Amp Live remains one of the most unpredictable acts in the game. Break a Dawn is Zion I's fourth album, recorded in Japan; it finds the duo working with frequent collaborators like Deuce Eclipse, Headnodic, Rashaan Ahmad, D.U.S.T., Lyrics Born, and Gift of Gab. As usual, Zumbi's lyricism is intelligent, relentlessly positive, and effortlessly funky, delivered in his trademark, charmingly squeaky flow. Amp's production fuses straight boom-bap with quality live instrumentation, intergalactic synths, complex drums, and hardcore Oakland slap. It's one of Zion I's best albums to date. Check out "Heavans Gate," "Act Right," "Live 4 Today," and "Count It Down."
