During the 1890s, inspired by the playing of Richard Mühlfeld, Brahms entered an Indian summer of composition for the clarinet that gave the world these three masterpieces. Joseph Shiner, a fast-rising star of the clarinet world, plays the two sonatas with a winning lyricism and eloquence, and has the complete measure of their autumnal glow. Somi Kim is a fine piano partner, never overwhelming the clarinet. With cellist Yoanna Prodanova, we are given the Clarinet Trio, a work with plenty of drama that they embrace fully, everything ebbing and flowing with effortless control.
