The recording of Jimi Hendrix’s last major gig, three weeks before his death in 1970, is an immaculate snapshot of a loose concert, with interference peppering his guitar work and strange feedback shrieks popping out of nowhere (“All Along the Watchtower”). It’s also a showcase for the brooding intensity of his relatively mellow songs, with “Midnight Lightning” filling the air with the funk of dread and “Machine Gun” taking on a ferocious majesty as his guitar strafes and weaves as if under artillery fire.
