Blue Dream

Blue Dream

A founding member of Azure Ray who enjoys working within the Saddle Creek Records scene, Orenda Fink has everything it takes to be a full-time solo artist. Blue Dream, her third solo album, is a beautifully sculpted collection of gentle songs that deal with a myriad of topics, though often concerned with the vagaries of death. (The songs are largely inspired by the death of Fink’s elderly dog.) Her lead vocals remain in a comfortable midrange while her backing vocals aren’t afraid to shoot for the skies. There’s a subtle aggression to “This Is a Part of Something Greater” and “You Are a Mystery,” two of the album’s clear highlights, where Fink’s phrasing and ability to toy with a melody achieves transcendence. The title track emphasizes the vowel power of her voice; a touch of organ adds to the solemn sense. “Sweet Disorder” takes personal pain and distills it into gorgeous harmonies and a somber, tastefully orchestrated folk song. From start to finish, Blue Dream is a beautiful piece of work.
