EDITORS’ NOTES

Blood Oranges in the Snow represents the third collection of holiday-inspired music from the Ohio-based husband-and-wife duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist, known as Over the Rhine. This effort takes the least obvious path to the holidays, foregoing Christmas carols and songs overtly tied to the season. “Another Christmas” does make the link, but it does so with an honest humanity. The cover of Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December” remains a poignant reminder of tough times. The all-star Band of Sweethearts, featuring pedal steel extraordinaire Eric Heywood, hollow-body bassist Jennifer Condos, and drummer Jay Bellerose, provide color and empathy.

Let it Fall!

OtR understands the bleaker melancholy side of Christmas which, in the end, makes for a more filling meal than the empty glitzy version sold by our consumer society. There's a quiet understated beauty in this album, a few tears shed, and hope for the coming year. And for long time OtR fans, a guest appearance by drummer Mickey Grimm which brought a smile to my face when I read the liner notes.

Song Stories

So few artists tell such beautiful stories in their writing. You quickly disappear into whatever scene is being set, most of which are painted white with snow. What a breath of fresh air, especially here in Hong Kong!

Sing the soundtrack of my year

Last year's album accompanied me through a magical journey of solitude across the ocean and back. This album promises to deliver even more with solid songs and excellent lyrics. I can't wait to see where it takes me.
