This funk-jazz collaboration between groove-oriented improvisers makes for mood music of the highest order. On opener “Chicago, Damn,” Humphrey’s control of tone is laser-like, fitting easily alongside the synth sounds. And her vocals on “Just a Love Child” and “Baby’s Gone” have a lilting charm. The Mizell Brothers’ compositions and production smarts keep this artifact of the early-’70s fusion phenomenon feeling timeless.
