In honor of Black Music Month 2021, Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig has created a special mix. Below, he shares his thoughts on Black music and how its rich legacy comes alive in his work. “Black music has been demonized since the beginning of recorded music, and has been used negatively by a racist movement to put Black Americans down. The strength and positivity that has always surrounded all forms of Black music—including gospel, the blues, jazz, funk, and soul—has been a beacon of hope for me and other lovers of music. The Rick Wilhite mix of Louie Vega's 'Vince Montana Tribute' shows how a simple disco groove can be turned into a voodoo groove. That's always been the case with disco, the way it reaches into the soul of the music and brings out this tribalistic groove.”
