There’s Nothing Like the Original

Latifah is okay, but her tunes are the soft spots on this soundtrack. The Armstrong stuff is, of course, fantastic. And the “duet” between Smith and Latifah is kind of embarrassing. Setting yourself up side by side with a true legend is never a good idea. Get the Bessie Smith records instead — you won’t regret it.

Waiting with bated breath

Just two seconds of hearing Queen Latifah as a blues shouter and I knew this was a must-have. She is crazy talented and I think does Bessie Smith justice. This soundtrack is a great sample of high quality recordings from the time period and a fabulous buy just before the HBO premiere of the film May 16th.
