After performing and recording all of Mahler’s symphonies, it seems appropriate that MTT and his fine San Francisco orchestra move on to a composer from the next musical generation. Alban Berg’s Three Orchestral Pieces are vividly colored and texturally complex, their seemingly straightforward titles (‘Preludes’, ‘Round Dance’ and ‘March’) a far cry from the extraordinary sounds you hear. Beautifully judged, forensically detailed and fabulously recorded, this is a treat for fans of early 20th century music.
