Classic UFO

"No Heavy Petting" is both heavier and more compositionally complete than "Phenomenon", and while it does not have as many weighty classics as "Force It", it sounds better than either previous LP in it's tougher production and performances...Schenker's guitar is otherworldly in it's power on this LP...and yes, 1977's "Lights Out" was a vast improvement (mainly due to the addition of brilliant keyboardist/guitarist Paul Raymond and of Ron Nevison's excellent production)...and well, big surprise, 1978's "Obesession" was and even better record...this was a young and extraordinarily band with a ton of chemistry in bloom. All of the Schenker-era UFO LPs are amongst the best hard rock records of the 1970's. "No Heavy Petting" is a gem.

Petting the monkey.

A terrific first half is followed by a forgettable second half. My two favorite songs are Belladonna and Reasons Love, the highlight of both being Michael Schenker's guitar solos. Belladonna is a beautiful little ballad and that guitar solo..Wow! Emotional as all heaven! Reasons Love is an uptempo hard rocker and Schenker's guitar during the lightning fast guitar solo sounds like bagpipes! Natural Thing is a very good song, as are the two that follow it. A very cool UFO album.
