EDITORS’ NOTES

While Junior Boys have been making beautiful electro-pop since 1999, this marks only the duo’s second album with its current lineup: original member Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus. The pair’s So This Is Goodbye was shortlisted for the 2007 Polaris Music Prize, and the Boys parlay this momentum into the keenly polished Begone Dull Care. Soulful falsetto-cooing skates atop the steady stomp of industrial-style drums on the album’s arresting opener (“Parallel Lines”), while undulating bass lends an electro-funk, Chromeo-esque undercurrent to “Bits and Pieces” and “Hazel.” As expected, there are plenty of shimmering synths throughout the album, but the pastoral melody on “Dull to Pause” is as bright and breathtaking as anything in Junior Boys’ catalog.

Very Good

I read in interviews that they were taking some influences from Morgan Geist and Kelley Polar for this collection. There is a definite sound that is somewhat new to the Junior Boys repetoire and I like the growth. Songs have moved away from the melancholy-Sunday-pop to perhaps a bit of Saturday night flair. A strong effort.

I waited til midnight!

I've been sitting on this album for a while now, waiting until the moment I could be seranaded once again by these guys! This is a classic, solid, beautiful addition to their already amazing collection of songs. Dull to pause will be my new soundtrack... I can feel it already.

rather disappointing

it seems like junior boys lost their characteristic iciness with this album. there's too much focus on jeremy greenspan's voice and not enough on the beats. the songs just don't sound as lush, precise, and interesting this time around. it sounds like they were trying to introduce more funk and r&b into their sound. overall, i was disappointed by this outing.
