Released in 2010, Before the Dawn is the tenth solo album from reggae icon Buju Banton, and earned him his first GRAMMY® Award after several nominations. Over the course of his storied career, he's endured controversy over his lyrics and prolonged legal challenges, but has always put out quality music, experimenting with multiple styles, whether dancehall, roots, or straight pop. Though relatively short at just ten songs, this album finds Buju in a mellow mood, delivering conscious messages and positive energy over easily likeable melodies, breezy horns, and strong grooves. "No Smoking At All" comes with crunchy guitars and a heavy rock beat, but most of the selections are extremely smooth, mid-tempo jams that blend together nicely. Everything on here is nice, "Rasta Can't Go" and "Struggle Together" are standouts.
