Beethoven: The Complete Piano Concertos

With an impressive set of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas under his belt—a feat he’s repeated in a single day in concert—Canadian pianist Goodyear turns to the concertos. Many of the qualities are replicated here: terrific freshness, a palpable feeling of energy, rhythmic drive that fairly fizzes, and a lively imagination. He makes a lovely sound too: Beautifully clear, and his way to make a trill glitter is very impressive. He sparkles in the first two concertos, brings real flair to No. 3 and No. 4, and ends with a commanding “Emperor.” The BBC NOW and Andrew Constantine are attentive partners.
