Brilliant

I like the work of Leif Ove Andsnes. His Grieg is as good as Rubinstein's and his Schumann Piano Quintet is, in my opinion, unsurpassed. With Beethoven, he brings fresh insight, a cleanly impeccable technique, and a good deal of sensitive imagination. The Fifth Piano Concerto is a popular work, so many people are going to have their preferences. A longtime favorite of mine is the Serkin/Bernstein classic. Andsnes takes a different approach in using a chamber orchestra. I think this allows him to be a little more classical in manner, bringing out a little more of the details of the orchestration. I love the triplets in the first movement that seem to hang like bubbles in the air. There is breathtaking poetry in his approach to the second movement, and if he does not crash into the third movement like Serkin, I think he brings out some new ideas in the Rondo. I am not as familiar with the Choral Fantasy, but it is a recording I will be going back to. All-in-all, Andsnes is such an artist that anything he records should be taken seriously.

The pieces themselves are beyond him, the orchestra fails to understand where he's going. The journey continues to find a better recording. -Bz
