SpotemGottem’s fanbase probably increased twentyfold in the first month of 2021. This would be a direct result of TikTok’s #junebugchallenge, which sent videos of erratic dancing set to the MC’s 2020 single “Beat Box” reverberating across socials. Final Destination, the Jacksonville rapper’s first long-playing project, has “Beat Box 2,” a version that maintains the “Ready to get it started/Bitch, I got no sensе” refrain popularized in the clips, but also features rising Memphis MC Pooh Shiesty. The song didn’t need Shiesty to succeed, but the collaboration is a reflection of SpotemGottem’s discretion, the MC having surrounded himself with similarly hungry, and similarly promising, up-and-comers (South Florida upstarts Jackboy, on “Blick-A-Thon,” and Hotboii, on “Dragon City,” are the project’s only other guests). Fans of “Beat Box” (1 or 2) will find plenty to love about Final Destination, a project full of the South Florida street talk delivered over skittering and danceable production that made SpotemGottem one of the scene’s most visible stars.
