Editors’ Notes Soul II Soul’s debut is a snapshot of club music in 1989. The Bristol, UK collective gives rise to soaring vocals from Caron Wheeler, who voices the world-weary yet optimistic title track and the sunny soul of “Back to Life.” Meanwhile, master of ceremonies Jazzie B pushes the party forward, rapping on “Feeling Free” and holding court like a Jamaican deejay on “Dance.” Then there are the sinuous acid house beats and flute solos of “African Dance” that simply command you to move—no voices required.
