EDITORS’ NOTES

Though Black Oak Arkansas isn't as well-known as Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Allman Brothers, during the '70s it was a successful Southern rock band that centered on charismatic frontman Jim “Dandy” Mangrum, whose outrageous onstage demeanor predated Van Halen’s David Lee Roth, among many others. Back Thar n’ Over Yonder features five brand-new 2013 recordings to accompany the discovery of 10 previously unreleased cuts produced by the legendary Tom Dowd at Miami’s Criteria Studios. The 2013 sessions include a serious rocker (“Plugged in and Wired”), a touching ballad (“Sweet Delta Water”), and a very BOA take on Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” that isn’t any less strange than its 1972 take on The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” The deluxe version adds four more tracks, including an unreleased demo of “Keep the Faith” from 1971, the sharp instrumental “G Wiz," and eight minutes of hilarious studio chatter and silly jamming called “Arby’s.”
