Rod Stewart’s 1975 superstar breakthrough album is a supremely upbeat résumé of his vocal talents. The roguish peacock rocker of “Alright for an Hour” and “Three Time Loser” is happy to drop his defenses for the heartbreaking folk of “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” and the wistful “Sailing.” And while “Drift Away” imbues Dobie Gray’s original with greater urgency, he’s equally keen to smooth out the ‘60s Detroit punch of “This Old Heart of Mine” with some sumptuous ‘70s Philly soul.
