As Long as It's Not Us
Lachlan Bryan and The Wildes may have made their name deep in the heart of Australia’s alt-country scene, but the Melbourne ensemble stretch well beyond those parameters on their fifth album. Flecked with drum machine, lead single “You Remind Me of Myself” is more moody indie rock than classic Americana, but doesn’t obscure Bryan’s longstanding lyrical nuances. He sings in passing of “papercuts and empty teacups” marking a character’s bedroom, while the brooding “I Went Down” unpacks the archetypal river setting of so many ballads about heartbreak and murder. Recording in The Wildes’ own studio under the steady hand of guitarist/producer Damian Cafarella, As Long as It’s Not Us also showcases new guitarist Riley Catherall, who contributes another intricate layer to the band's textured songwriting.
