14 Songs, 49 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Art Angels’ opening trio of songs present a handy summation of Claire Boucher’s singular appeal. The operatic “Laughing and Not Being Normal” opens before making way for “California”. Ostensibly an irresistible country-twanged foot-tapper and easily the catchiest thing she’s recorded, its lyrics unload a bleak commentary on her industry’s treatment of female stars. Next up: the strident “Scream” featuring Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes and plenty of actual howling. Whether discordant and urgent (“Flesh without Blood”, “Kill V. Maim”) or dazzlingly beautiful (“Easily”, “Pin”), Art Angels is a Catherine wheel of ferocious pop invention and Grimes’ grandest achievement.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics. Apple Digital Master

I want this in the front page of iTunes

Grimes is breaking through with the same experimental sound except more structured with a higher production sound, the long wait is going to be so worth it! PUT THIS GODDESS IN THE FRONT PAGE NEXT TO JUSTIN, ELLIE, AND ADELE. SHE DESERVES RECOGNITION AT LEAST

Different? Yes. Groundbreaking? Yes.

People change. You are not the same person you were when you were 12, or 22, or 52. So do not hate on Grimes because her sound has evolved. Her body of work speaks volumes to her talent and each album she has created is its own manifesto. The production on this album is immense and yes, you can clearly hear what she is saying in each song (much different from Halfaxa), but that does not take away from the sheer beauty of this album. Grimes is a legend. And real fans will realize that no matter what she puts out. I secretly wish she put out the former album during the “Go” fiasco, because Im sure it was still stellar. Grimes, keep making beautiful music and always stay true to your heart.
